Themed background maps

← What's newappearance

The Dark display theme now draws the street background map dark to match, and Light returns it to its usual colours. The overlay drawn over aerial imagery changes with it. Aerial imagery looks the same in both, as does any background map whose provider publishes no dark version.

The street map is also simplified before it is drawn. It shows roads and their names, water and water names, place names from suburbs up to countries, land use, buildings, parks and boundaries. It leaves out points of interest such as shops and cafés, house numbers, mountain peaks, airport labels, and the numbered badges on highways. Building fills are drawn faint and footpaths at half strength, so your own data sits on top of the background.

How to try it

  1. Open the settings menu in the workspace header and set Theme to dark.
  2. Watch the background map change with it.
  3. Switch the background to aerial imagery and set the theme back to light.

Opening a map in the User Guide covers this in full.
