Street names over aerial imagery
An aerial imagery background used to cost you every name on the map. Now the street map’s roads, boundaries and place names are drawn over the imagery, so you can read a street name while looking at what is actually on the ground.
The street map’s filled areas, meaning buildings, parks, land use and water, are hidden while the overlay is showing, so the photography shows through. It is no longer painted over. Switch back to the street map and they return. The overlay is simplified the same way the street map is, and follows the display theme into dark mode.
How to try it
- Open the background picker in the bottom-right corner of the map.
- Switch to aerial imagery.
- Zoom in on a street: the name is drawn over the photo.
